Impact

Impact logic and outcomes

CLEAR Marathon Cambodia is designed as a financing mechanism that converts participation into unrestricted capital. That capital accelerates APOPO delivery from land clearance through agricultural transition and agroforestry systems into resilient rural livelihoods, while also delivering a ring fenced tourism development contribution to the City of Siem Reap.

Impact at a glance

Unrestricted funding Flexible capital that can fill gaps when donor cycles constrain delivery
CLEAR pathway Clear land to resilient livelihoods through Minefields to Rice Fields and agroforestry transition
Tourism ring fence Ten percent of net surplus allocated to Siem Reap tourism development
Scaled outcomes From hundreds to thousands of households supported as participation grows
Impact estimates below are based on the stated event scenarios and programme assumptions. Implementation priorities and village targeting are defined by APOPO delivery planning and on the ground context.

The CLEAR pathway

CLEAR is a simple structure that represents the programme delivery pathway in Cambodia. The marathon funds this pathway by generating unrestricted capital that can scale implementation quickly.

C Clear land Humanitarian demining and survey operations release land from explosive contamination.
L Land released to farmers Formal land release enables safe, legal, and productive agricultural use.
E Economic transition Minefields to Rice Fields converts cleared land into income generating farming systems.
A Agroforestry systems Diversified tree based and syntropic systems restore soil health, water retention, and climate resilience.
R Resilient rural livelihoods Sustained household income growth, food security, and long term stability.

Impact logic aligned to outcomes

The impact logic follows a clear chain from inputs to outcomes and longer term effects. Unrestricted surplus becomes programme capacity that drives income outcomes at household level and stabilises rural livelihoods over time.

Inputs

Runner fees, sponsorship, corporate entries, and virtual participation generate net surplus after delivery costs and the tourism ring fence.

Outputs

Programme resources support farmer cohorts, input packages, training, market linkage, and agroforestry establishment in priority provinces.

Outcomes

Increased farm productivity, diversified income streams, reduced input dependence, and improved resilience through tree based systems.

Base scenario impact

Base scenario assumes 5,000 physical runners and the stated event financial structure. Ten percent of net unrestricted surplus is allocated to Siem Reap tourism development. The remaining unrestricted funding is applied to APOPO programmes aligned to Minefields to Rice Fields and agroforestry transition.

Base scenario Estimate
Net unrestricted surplus from event Approx USD 157,000
Tourism ring fenced contribution Approx USD 15,000
APOPO unrestricted funding after tourism Approx USD 142,000
Households supported 300 to 500
Villages reached 8 to 12
Incremental income per household per year USD 600 to 1,000
Annual aggregate income increase USD 300,000 to 500,000
Five year income effect USD 1.5 to 2.5 million
These figures represent an outcome logic estimate based on programme assumptions and cohort scale. Actual delivery varies by province, partner configuration, and seasonal conditions.

Scale scenario impact

Scale scenario assumes 15,000 runners with the stated event structure and economies of scale. Ten percent of net unrestricted surplus is allocated to Siem Reap tourism development. The remainder scales APOPO programmes significantly.

Scale scenario Estimate
Net unrestricted surplus from event Exceeds USD 1.2 million
Tourism ring fenced contribution USD 120,000 plus
APOPO unrestricted funding after tourism Approx USD 1.08 million
Households supported 2,000 plus
Villages reached 40 plus
Five year income effect USD 8 to 12 million
At scale, the event becomes a major annual funding engine with meaningful tourism investment capacity and multi province programme scale.

What outcomes look like in practice

The event funds a set of practical interventions that increase income and reduce risk for rural households. Outcomes are designed to be understandable and reportable without complex claims.

Income stability

Minefields to Rice Fields enables farmers to move from unsafe or underused land into structured production with higher and more stable returns.

Resilience through diversification

Agroforestry systems add tree based income streams and protect yields by improving soil and water retention and reducing climate exposure.

Longer term recovery

Resilient livelihoods reduce distress migration and strengthen community stability over time in areas affected by past conflict and land degradation.

Siem Reap tourism contribution

Ten percent of net unrestricted surplus is allocated to the City of Siem Reap as a ring fenced tourism development contribution. Funds are released only after successful event completion.

Ring fenced allocation Ten percent of net unrestricted surplus
Eligible uses Wayfinding signage, destination marketing, and community visitor experience improvements
Release rule Released only after successful completion under governance controls
Visibility Supports the city and strengthens the event story for sponsors and delegates

Integrity and reporting

CLEAR is designed to be credible. Governance controls protect funds, prevent premature distribution, and keep reporting simple and verifiable.

Prize and incentive envelope is capped before launch and cannot expand without formal approval.
No funds are distributed in advance. Programme and tourism allocations are released only after completion.
Cancellation and force majeure clauses include non distribution rules to prevent leakage.

Join the impact

Every registration and sponsor commitment increases unrestricted funding for programmes and expands the ring fenced tourism contribution for Siem Reap.
